European Maritime Day 2012 – Hopes for Blue Growth

European Maritime Day 2012

The European Maritime Day is celebrated annually on 20 May since 2008. The purpose is to highlight the importance of the seas and oceans and the challenges facing maritime regions and sectors. Several events are organised across Europe and the main event is held in one place, in the form of a high level meeting and a stakeholder conference.

After Brussels 2008, Rome 2009, Gijon 2010 and Gdansk 2011, the 2012 edition was held in Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden – for the first time in Scandinavia and in the North Sea area. The theme of this year’s conference is “Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and the coasts: Blue growth”.  This year 1200+ people attended the conference – including Waterways Forward Swedish partners, County Administrative Board of Värmland –  contributing to discussions regarding our common maritime future. Commissioner Damanaki highlighted the prospect for growth in the maritime sector and maintained that our future is blue.

” Through the Waterways Forward and Waterways for Growth projects we attended  the European Maritime Day conference in Gothenburg that tackled the theme: Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and coasts – blue growth.”    Ida and Katarina of  County Administrative Board of Värmland
