Waterways can help deliver Europe 2020 – Smart, sustainable, inclusive growth.

The Waterways Forward project has identified a number of good practices which piont the way towards delivering smart, sustainable, inclusive growth.  The following are a selection of 17 of the Good Practices identified by partners and produced by Landscape Interface Studio, Kingston University which highight the contribution of waterways to the environment.

Low carbon economy – combating climate change

  1. Adaptation:- Flood / water management –EC 18 Loess wall, Dunaujvaros

Sustainable transport – Climate change mitigation

  1. Freight – EC4    Freight traffic, Varmland.  Emphasise links with maritime regions 
  2. Freight –  G9 Cross-border waterway management, Savonlinna – Emphasise cross-border links with 3rd countries (Russia)
  3.  Passenger – G20 Innovative tools for tourism promotion, Ferrara – cycling tourism aspect

Pollution / waste management 

  1.  EC1    Implementation of WFD, Ireland – chemical water quality aspects

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment has just announced that the Commission is considering how a 7th Environment Action Programme could best provide added value in the rapidly evolving environment policy context.  A consultation process has just been launched with the purpose to collect the views of all stakeholders, at EU and national level, and the public at large on the environment policy priorities up to 2020. Informed opinions are sought on the priority areas to be addressed and on the most effective tools for the EU to employ in addressing the challenges described in the consultation document.”     The period of consultation runs from 12th March 2012  to 1st June 2012
